Neck Pain

Without a doubt, neck pain is one of the most common complaints we see at Preferred Chiropractic. Given the huge amount of time many people spend at their workstations, and on their phones, tablets or other digital devices at home, it’s no surprise that many suffer from this type of discomfort.

Signs and symptoms of neck pain include headaches, muscle tightness and spasms, and a decreased ability to move your head.

Common Causes

Because of your neck’s flexibility and the fact that it supports the weight of your head, it can be prone to injuries and conditions that result in pain and limited motion. Here are some of the most common causes of neck discomfort:

Muscle strains. Sitting for many hours a day hunched over your computer often triggers muscle strains. Even reading in bed—particularly if you lack proper neck support—can strain neck muscles.

Worn joints. Joints in our neck generally tend to wear as we age. These joints are fed cerebrospinal fluid through joint motion or movement. When bones lose their proper alignment for an extended period of time, they may get stuck in positions which cause them to starve for nutrition. Ultimately, if left unattended, eventual arthritis may settle in.

Nerve compression. Disc injuries, spinal misalignments and even bone spurs in the vertebrae of your neck can put pressure on the nerves that branch out from the spinal cord.

Injuries. A rear-end car collision often results in a whiplash injury, which occurs when the head is jerked rapidly backward and then forward, resulting in the soft tissues of the neck being stretched or strained.

Our Approach

Dr. Steve prefers the safest approach. He can provide adjustments with handheld instruments which deliver a more precise correction in Dr. Steve’s opinion. Instruments also offer adjustments that do NOT come with any”cracking” sounds….which some folks are concerned about.

For those wishing to be adjusted by hand, that is not a problem. Dr. Steve is proficient at hand corrections as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon do patients typically notice relief?

If it’s just a simple bone out of place, typically a treatment or two will offer relief. For someone who has ignored their pain for a while, it could take a few more treatments. This often depends on if there is lactic acid build up or scar tissue to contend with. These cases tend to average about 4 treatments.

How do you calm a nervous patient?

For patients who are apprehensive about getting care, Dr. Steve will usually start them on a percussion massage machine, which is relaxing and helps take away some of the patient’s apprehension. He also tries not to over correct on the first day; in order not to overwhelm the body.

Our office is also a soothing oasis that helps patients feel at ease from the moment they walk through our door.

What other things can I do to address my discomfort?

Adopting proper posture, avoiding looking down at your smartphone or tablet, sleeping in a proper position, and setting up your office to be ergonomically friendly all may help.
