Preferred Chiropractic Frequently Asked Questions

Like other Chiropractors, at Preferred Chiropractic we hear many questions from our patients. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we are asked.

Do Chiropractic adjustments hurt and…. what is that cracking sound about?

I’ll take on the cracking sound first… the “cracking sound” is generally air being released from the joint capsules in the area being corrected. Does it hurt? I will answer that question like this…..does it hurt when you crack your knuckle? People are often afraid of things that they don’t understand. There is no need to worry, I use many different Chiropractic techniques in my office and the majority of them do not involve the “air release” which, as stated earlier is responsible for the cracking sound that cause some folks apprehension.

I’ve heard that Chiropractic treatments do not involve taking medicine. If this is true, then how does your body heal?

Great question! Your nervous system is what keeps your organs functioning properly. The nervous system is protected by the bones of the spinal column. A variety of circumstances can cause these bones to mis-align from time to time. In a nutshell, these misalignments can cause our bodies to malfunction over time. A Chiropractor’s job is to restore proper function to the nervous system through light force corrections to the spine. Once your body is functioning properly, it does what it is designed/programmed to do… it heals itself.

I’ve heard that once you see a Chiropractor, you have to keep returning, why is that?

Another excellent question! The best way to illustrate this would probably come from the dentistry model. When your teeth become mis-aligned, are they fixed overnight when “braces” are installed? The short answer is no. It takes time to correct something if it is “seriously mis-aligned” because the muscular tone of the area needs to be return to normal first. Generally speaking… the length of your Chiropractic treatments will depend on the seriousness of your injury and your goals as a patient, plus what your x-rays are revealing to us. Example: A serious scoliosis (found by x-rays) will take a good amount of time to reduce, where a simple pinched nerve causing a patient some pain may take as little as one treatment to fix. Each patient’s circumstances are different. However, at my office, the decision is always up to the patient. I will guide you but NEVER pressure you!

What is your greatest achievement in Chiropractic?

I had a 61 year old lady come to see me for excruciating lower back pain. She was told by her medical doctors that she probably would never walk again without the use of a cane. It seemed that the pain this woman was experiencing was being caused by a very small tumor that was in an area too dangerous to operate on. I remember seeing her face and how stressed out she looked. All signs were pointing toward her retiring and that was something she was unprepared for financially; for she was going through a brutal divorce at the time of her pain.

I used a Chiropractic technique called (SOT Blocking) that was very non-invasive. Comfortable wedges were inserted under the patients pelvis in order to open up the disc and facet spacing in the lower back. The patient lies in a prone position for about 20 – 30 minutes. This technique provides gentle traction to the entire lumbar spine. It is normally used on hot disc patients for 12 consecutive treatments. Chiropractic Care more was more than likely her last chance, so we did all that we could. I treated this particular case by seeing the patient twice a day for 6 straight days, then once a day for an additional 6 days.

She left my office  2 weeks later with no pain whatsoever. Her medical doctors were in a state of disbelief at her next check-up. They convinced her to take another MRI…. on them! The second MRI revealed no signs of any tumors. After comparing her two MRI’s at my office, my patient and I shared a quick hug and a long smile.

Results like this gives me great joy !!!
